Life in Plastic, It’s Fantastic! The Beauty of Barbiecore Fashion

Hi, Barbie said one! And the crowd of a billion and more echoed the greeting resolutely. For the uninitiated and those living under a rock – a boulder at that, Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited 'Barbie' hits the theatres this weekend across the globe and as you would expect, pink is very hot right now. So come on Barbie, let’s go party!

Breaking away from the pandemic’s gloom, for the past year the world has been more hopeful than ever. Naturally, dopamine dressing has been quite the rage, with self-expression becoming a central theme to how people style themselves – how they feel (happy) is how they should look (happier)!

And what brighter, hotter color than pink? It is everywhere & it wants all the attention it can get. Barbiecore is not a new addition to the plethora of trends that are simply a flash in the pan, but this hyper-feminine trend, if you would like to call it a trend, has always been a constant. For context, it's been a year since Barbiecore took over like a storm and is still going strong.

Barbiecore has exploded since the pandemic slowly made its way out. Mood-boosting fits have become the flavor du jour and you'd be hard-pressed to find celebs that haven't confessed their love for fuchsia. Backing this bright and unapologetic shade is not only its mainstream appeal, but also runways accepting it fully.

Barbiecore on the Runway

Jeremy Scott & Moschino's 2015 spring collection was something of a novel idea coming to life. Inspired by Barbie, the collection honored its jet-setting, multi-hyphenated, and strongly feminine lifestyle, paying homage in the most fashionable way possible. Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino collection gave birth to a hot pink Pantone shade of its own, with every piece stripped down to just one hue. Masaba didn't hold back either, taking over the trend and desi-fying it in a rani-pink, chanderi cotton saree, putting her spin on Barbiecore to call it 'Ranicore'. Iconic in our books.

Becoming a 21st-century fashion staple, the rosy-themed, glitter clad, excessively pink early 2000s was pop culture embracing Barbiecore in its complete glory. Costume stylings from Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 going on 30 have become eternal, etching themselves a special space in pop culture history and subsequently furthering the trend. And it's true, on Wednesday, we do wear Pink. It isn't surprising if you find Pinterest Barbiecore mood boards to be an amalgamation of nostalgia, the Y2K aesthetic, and everything hyperfeminine.

A Celebrity Favourite

Gigi Hadid, Margot Robbie, Kim Kardashian, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ryan Gosling, Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Bhumi Pednekar, and Alia Bhatt are just a few names that have dazzled in this fuchsia flurry recently. While the shade has certainly moved away from being simply reduced to being feminine, Barbiecore is reclaiming the color to redefine how the world looks at gender dynamics.

However, the Mattel doll has also faced its fair share of criticism for imposing ideals of beauty that are narrow-minded and unrealistic. But if we stick to simply the color, its pervasiveness has made it ideal for anyone and everyone to partake in this glowing frenzy and be fabulous with it.

Barbiecore looks to truly become a permanent resident in our style feed, and with the Barbie film finally unveiling itself to the big screen this weekend, the style will forever become a part of cultural history. An adulation that is much deserved for the pop culture icon.

We don’t know what the movie is about, but we can guarantee that it’s going to be pink. And in the meantime, here are some Barbiecore inspired style pieces that should add much needed hot pink to your closet:
