But, let's take a minute to acknowledge how fast the decade passed us by. Movies that were fresh in your memory were actually released 5 years ago (The Kangaga Ranaut-starrer Queen<\/em> had released in 2014. And here you are dancing to London Thumakda<\/em> like it was yesterday).<\/span>\n\nConsider this our #10yearchallenge of sorts as we list the 29 movies of the decade which have left a mark on the way the Bollywood-enjoying-cohort have dressed or looked. From the halter-neck-loving tops of Deepika Padukone in Kartik Calling Kartik<\/em> in 2011 to the bralette lehengas of SOTY 2<\/em>\u00a0of 2019, the trends enlisted are far and wide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nHave a look!\u00a0<\/span>\n

2010<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Aisha, Karthik calling Karthik, Band Bajaa Baraat<\/p><\/div>\n\nThe decade began with some of the freshest looks by our leading actresses in Aisha, Karthik Calling Karthik and Band Bajaa Baraat. The common trend that we witnessed throughout the movies were the crisp, demure tees and shirts, sported by Sonam, Deepika and Anushka in their respective movies. Further more, we love how sleek halter-necks commonly found their path in our wardrobes through these movies. Deepika was trending with THAT haircut in KCK, with formals constructing her major wardrobe for the movie.<\/span>\n\nAnushka not only nailed her performance in her debut movie Band Bajaa Baaraat but also managed to influence us to wear comfy kurtis with denims and also how to wear ethnic on a regular day out. On the contrary, Aisha being the first Indian fashion-glamour oriented movie, taught us high-end grooming, along-with a full influence of checks and plaid prints (and those beret hats!). This just seemed like the beginning of a fashion-oriented era.\u00a0<\/span>\n

2011<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Tanu Weds Manu, Don 2, The Dirty Picture<\/p><\/div>\n\n2011 saw movies like\u00a0Tanu Weds Manu, Don 2 and The Dirty Picture which took styling a notch higher. Priyanka as Roma in Don 2 sported monotones like never before - with cocktail gowns, tank-tops and shirts, making it one of the classiest looks of the year. Again, on the contrary,\u00a0Vidya Balan as Silk Smitha, broke all fashion (and ideal body) stereotypes in The Dirty Picture. Flamboyant sarees<\/strong> <\/a>with ruffles, deep sweetheart blouse necklines, and gaudy sequined gowns became the talk of town.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nKangana Ranaut served us with fun, pop-coloured ethnic wear looks. We saw a galore of bright embroidered kurta set for women<\/strong><\/a>, patiyalas<\/em>\u00a0and lehengas in Tanu Weds Manu. Those, for sure made their way in our closet.<\/span>\n

2012<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Meera From Cocktail, Veronica From Cocktail, Alia Bhatt in Student Of The Year<\/p><\/div>\n\n2012 rightly turned Deepika's career (as well as the over-all dress-up game, all thanks to Anaita Shroff-Adjania) a good 360 degrees round. Cocktail, bearing a concoction of two different looks - portrayed by Deepika and Diana, showed us the best of party wear along with a demure, girl-next-door vibe. To see sheer and\u00a0midriff-baring tops, bralettes, shorts on Veronica, along- with kurta sets<\/a>, pussy-bow blouses on Meera, showed us the best of both worlds.<\/span>\n\nAlia's debut was no less glamorous, with her playing a fashionista in SOTY. Classy and chic dresses, baring lehengas and school uniform-skirts became everyone's favourite along with her. We saw a palette of mostly reds and pinks, golden and silver, to mark a true teenage-oriented fashion movie.<\/span>\n

2013<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Race 2, Chennai Express, Ram Leela, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani<\/p><\/div>\n\n2013 was officially Deepika's year. With four blockbusters back-to-back, each serving other-worldly looks altogether, she taught us how to carry any outfit effortlessly. In Race 2, Deepika was seen seen in cocktail-worthy, high-end dresses and gowns with over-sized sunglasses, flowy fabrics and a bash of neon in 'Party on my mind'.\u00a0 Ram Leela, where Deepika played a Gujrati dynamo Leela, blessed us with beautiful twirly lehengas<\/a> consisting of mostly reds and whites. Rustic chandbaalis, danglers and the infamous nose-ring were the best add-ons.<\/span>\n\nShe went ahead to charm everyone with her portrayal as Naina from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, and her sartorial transition from a shy girl to a confident doctor with simple tees, skirts and jackets, to deep v-neck blouses (remember the blue saree from Badtameez Dil?), bandeau blouses with lehengas and floral dresses<\/a>. Her funniest role till date as Menamma, depicted her in bright-coloured\u00a0kanjeevaram\u00a0<\/em>silk sarees<\/a> (and lehenga-sarees<\/a>) with temple jewellery, bindi and\u00a0mogra gajras<\/em>. Right here are the four diverse movie looks Bollywood had ever seen in a year by the same actress.<\/span>\n

2014<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Kangana's traditional kurtas and\u00a0 floral and traditional prints on pastel kurtis with denims, with pretty lace tops. Following the floral trend, Deepika sported chic white floral indian dresses online<\/strong><\/a> in Finding Fanny, along with pastel tops and skirts combination.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nKhoobsurat, on the other hand, had a blast of pop-colours (considering it's Sonam), with quirky prints and dhoti sets. Lots of fusion styling was seen with lots of jacket<\/a> overlaying on traditional silhouettes.\u00a0<\/span>\n

2015<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Dil Dhadakne Do, Bajirao Mastani, Piku<\/p><\/div>\n\nBollywood's leading ladies Priyanka and Deepika ruled the box-office in 2015, individually and together. Dil Dhadakne Do saw Priyanka in\u00a0the best resort-wear. There were many high-street chic dresses, gowns, halter-neck tops and flared pants. Deepika in Piku, on the other hand, sported earthy kurtis and sarees which was basically a working woman's wardrobe. Also, those cat-eye sunglasses?<\/span>\n\nTogether, they created magic in Bajirao Mastani with historic silhouettes consisting of intricate embroidery. Deepika's sage green and gold anarkali-lehenga<\/strong> <\/a>from the song Mastani\u00a0<\/em>revived anarkalis and brought them to the fore again.\u00a0However, our takeaway from the year 2015 was Deepika and Priyanka's\u00a0\u00a0purple and wine coloured polka-dot\u00a0nauvari<\/em> sarees in Pinga<\/em>. Anju Modi, who designed the costumes for the movie, won 'Best Costume Designer' at the Filmfare Awards for the movie, and we can't think of anyone else who would have done justice to it.\u00a0<\/span>\n

2016<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Befikre, Ki And Ka, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil<\/p><\/div>\n\nMovie costumes took a turn for non-fussy, crisp silhouettes since 2017.\u00a0 After watching\u00a0movies like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ki and Ka, and Befikre, we saw a lot of no-nonsense silhouettes. Anushka's character- Alizeh, in ADHM wore a mix of modern and traditional outfits, ranging from chikan and threadwork kurtas with ripped jeans, lots monotone jackets and scarves and most importantly, the embellished golden kurta-lehenga set by Manish Malhotra for Channa Mereya <\/em>which set a whole new trend for OTT wedding lehengas<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nRocking the power-dressing trend for the modern working woman, Kareena showed us how to get A-line dresses, pantsuits and a jacket-blouse combo right. Strict monotones were the key here, with contemporary jewellery as an add-on. Vani Kapoor played a chic young girl with mixed heritage, with lots of Parisian influence on her sartorial choices. Tees and shorts, leather pants, dungrees and floral dresses, were the right amount of casual for a regular day out.<\/span>\n

2017<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Raees, Hindi Medium<\/p><\/div>\n\n2017 was the year where the dapper men stole our attention. Shah Rukh Khan in a classic pathani<\/em>\u00a0kurta<\/a> suit and kohl eyes is a look from Raees that we can't get over.\u00a0We shall also credit him for single-handedly reviving\u00a0aviator glasses on-screen and redefining men's fashion in the movie industry.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nComing in on number 2 is the highly unexpected Hindi Medium where Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar portrayed\u00a0the ultimate bourgeois fashion.\u00a0But, as the song Suit Suit rightly suggests, \"tenu suit suit karda\/ keep it desi, like you're in Delhi\", encouraging the audience's personal style.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n

2018<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Gully Boy<\/p><\/div>\n\n

(Anti-Clockwise) Padmaavat, Raazi, Veere Di Wedding<\/p><\/div>\n\n2018 had four major blockbusters with Ranveer in Gully Boy, Deepika in Padmaavat, Sonam and Kareena in Veere Di Wedding and yet another powerful performance by Alia in Raazi.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nSartorially, while\u00a0Padmaavat<\/em> saw traditional embroidery styles like salma, gota<\/em> and sitara\u00a0<\/em>on the opulent red and pastel ghagras<\/em>, with intricate and dense gold jewellery,\u00a0<\/span>Veere Di Wedding<\/em>\u00a0showed us how to rock contemporary wear like a pro with a barrage of off-shoulder bridal lehengas<\/strong><\/a>, to metallic party dresses, flamboyant prints and embellishments.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nRaazi came as a pleasant surprise with all the demure and simple ethnic wear on Alia. There were toned-down pastel kurta sets and sarees<\/a> which made way into our closets as well.<\/span>\n\nSaving the best for last, Ranveer made 2018 his year as 'Murad' aka Gully Boy. Taking the definition of 'street style' quite literally, we saw earthy monotone jackets, kurta sets<\/strong><\/a>, and over-sized shirts and the infamous rapper vibe inducing hoodies - except, this time, they were worn with pathani kurtas!<\/span>\n

2019<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

(left to right) Kalank, Student Of The Year 2<\/p><\/div>\n\n\u00a0The last year of the decade saw\u00a0our favourite traditional silhouettes modernised with a contemporary spin on them. Think Kalank and Student Of The Year 2, both extremely different in terms of the couture displayed, and yet, with outfits that could well fit into today's fashion landscape.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nKalank<\/em> had Alia, Madhuri and Sonakshi's characters wearing\u00a0heavy zardozi-embroidered kurta-sharara sets, lehengas and sarees in decadent jewel hues, with rich and decadent jewellery while Student of the Year 2<\/em><\/span>, took modern dressing to next level with skirt-top sets, metallic dresses, and lehengas<\/strong> <\/a>that came with the so-now bralette tops and thigh-high slit that set the tone for the wedding season for the younger demographic.
