There's a particular kind of quiet that falls over a weightlifting arena in the seconds before a bar leaves the platform. On Sunday, July 26, at Glasgow's SEC Armadillo, that silence belonged to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, and she broke it three times over.  While the nation celebrates her historic CWG 2026 gold medal, fans have also long admired the Olympian's effortless love for traditional sarees and handwoven Indian textiles, proving that strength and elegance can coexist beautifully.

Competing in the women's 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, the 31-year-old Manipuri lifter delivered a Games-record total of 190kg, built from an 85kg snatch and a 105kg clean and jerk. Both lifts rewrote the Games record books, while her snatch also established a new Commonwealth record. It wasn't flawless. She lost her balance on her opening 82kg snatch and missed her first clean-and-jerk attempt at 105kg. But resilience has always defined Mirabai Chanu. She returned to lift 85kg in the snatch and secured gold on her second clean-and-jerk attempt, turning setbacks into history.

A Hat-Trick a Decade in the Making

This wasn't just another medal. It was the perfect full-circle moment.

Mirabai Chanu's Commonwealth Games journey began in Glasgow 2014, where the young Manipuri lifter claimed silver on her Games debut. Twelve years later, after an Olympic silver medal, a Padma Shri, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, she returned to the very city where it all started and claimed her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, following victories at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

She also handed India its first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, once again leading from the front.

With international weightlifting restructuring its categories and the discontinuation of her preferred 49kg division, Chanu had to adapt her body, training, and competition strategy to return to the 48kg category.
