What's New Who Wore What When

24 Years Later, No One Does Cannes Quite Like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

There are celebrities who attend Cannes, and then there is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a presence so intertwined with the festival that her arrival feels less like an appearance and more like an event. Since first stepping onto the red carpet in 2002, she has transformed into one of Cannes’ most enduring fashion icons, consistently delivering the kind of moments that linger long after the flashbulbs fade.

Because Aishwarya has never relied on trends to stay relevant. While red carpet aesthetics evolve year after year, she continues to bring something rarer: unmistakable star power. Whether in dramatic couture, sculptural gowns, or timeless Indian silhouettes, she carries a kind of old-world glamour that feels increasingly rare on modern red carpets, poised, cinematic, and instantly recognisable.

Perhaps that is why, even after two decades, Cannes still seems to pause for her. New names arrive every year, fashion cycles move faster than ever, but Aishwarya remains one of the festival’s most photographed, discussed, and anticipated presences. Twenty-four years later, she is not just attending Cannes, she is still ruling it.

And Cannes 2026 was yet another reminder of exactly why. With two unforgettable looks, Aishwarya once again proved that nobody does Cannes quite like her.

LOOK 1: The Blue Amit Aggarwal Gown — Luminara

1,500 Hours of Handwork. For One Gown. Yes, Really.

For Cannes 2026, Amit Aggarwal created Luminara as a couture piece built entirely around the concept of light in motion. Not as static illumination, but as energy, movement, and force, translated through sculptural construction and engineered craftsmanship.

The result? Pure magic on the red carpet.

Crystal Veins and Cosmic Depths

At the heart of the gown is Aggarwal's Crystal Vein embroidery technique, developed over 1,500+ hours of painstaking handwork. Thousands of crystalline linear elements are placed across the gown in a lattice-like structure, creating illuminated pathways across the body.

The crystals refract and transform continuously as the wearer moves, creating a kinetic visual effect rather than a fixed surface, so every step Aishwarya took on that carpet was essentially a new look.

Structure That Commands a Room

The silhouette draws from biomimicry, wing-like shoulder extensions suggest movement and propulsion, while the body is contoured with sharp architectural lines. Rendered in an abyss blue, the piece references cosmic depth and light travelling through space.

Aggarwal described it as more than clothing, an "energy field" around Aishwarya. The collaboration, styled by Mohit Rai, was designed to explore light as strength, transformation, and movement, while reflecting her decades-long global presence.

A gown with a philosophy. Only Ash could pull that off.

LOOK 2: The Powder Pink Sophie Couture Gown — Soft Power at Its Finest

From Red Carpet to Dinner — and Still Unmatched

If the blue gown was Aishwarya in warrior mode, the second look was pure poetry. After gracing the red carpet in the stunning Amit Aggarwal creation, Aishwarya stepped out of her hotel for dinner in a powder pink gown, and the internet collectively lost it all over again.

A Cape That Does All The Talking

The gown was designed by Sophie Couture and featured heavy crystal detailing across the fabric, designed to reflect light under camera flashes and event lighting. The cape added movement and volume to the outfit, creating a softer, flowing silhouette with a strong visual presence.

It was the kind of look that makes you understand why Aishwarya has been a Cannes fixture for over two decades. Effortless, considered, completely iconic.

24 Years and Still the Most Awaited Woman at Cannes

Aishwarya has been attending Cannes since 2002, when she first walked the festival alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to represent Devdas, becoming one of the first Indian actors to gain sustained international recognition there. Her appearance in a traditional yellow saree that year marked a turning point for Indian representation on the global stage.

Gold Chiffon Metallic Thread Striped Ruffle Gown: Pure old-Hollywood drama meets Indian couture. This gold chiffon gown features a metallic striped bodice, draped detailing, and a ruffle panel that moves beautifully. Exactly the kind of piece that makes an entrance.

Black Asymmetric Cutdana Embellished Gown: If you want the drama without the colour, this is it. An asymmetric neckline, tonal cutdana embellishments all over, and a draped silhouette that feels incredibly sophisticated. Formal events will never be the same.

Blue Sweetheart Neck Structured Pleated Draped Gown;  A direct nod to the Cannes momentthis royal blue gown features a sweetheart neckline, a braided structured bodice, pleated skirt, and cutdana detailing. It's the one to reach for if you want a little piece of that Luminara energy for yourself.
